So I am slowly, SLOWLY, catching up on posting. While staying in San Donato in APRIL (WHERE does the time go???), we took a local, 45 minute bus ride into Florence several days in a row. Florence is the Italy I imagined: at once old and new, busy but full of time to savor life, overflowing with gorgeous architecture (of which we in the U.S. can only dream), and a place where one is bombarded with history and art just by stepping on the sidewalk. It was a bit overwhelming, to be honest, but in a good way.

Below are a few pictures of our time here. Mostly we spent it wandering, climbing the billion steps to the bell tower in the Duomo (main cathedral in the city), and snapping pics of all the terra cotta roofs from above.

There were also several wonderful restaurants, none of which I can recall the names (sorry!!). One stood out though, because it was not only a neighborhood place, but a very traditional one. The food was traditional Italian and certainly good, but the charm of the place was the ambiance. Laid back and communal, we sat at a shared table and chatted with elderly Italian men about the best parts if the city. Instead of ordering it, bread and a bottle of wine were shared by the table. When we went to pay, the cashier simply asked how many glasses of wine we had poured for ourselves and charged us on our word! In a place like this, I have a feeling people could loose track pretty quickly…

We really had such a blast wandering through this beautiful city, a few days was not enough!
